Tourist in my own town pt.2 + InPhaseProd piece

March 28, 2006

So this weekend, after a quiet Saturday spent recovering from my 30th birthday party and the news from Capitol Hill, Josh and I spent Sunday downtown in the sun. Our friend Robb had an installation up in Westlake Park for 4 days, and in return for Robb’s soundman skills for the DAE at my birthday party, Josh helped him set up the final day. (not me, I was taking pictures:)

Around lunch time we decided to go get some mac & cheese from Beecher’s, the artisan cheesemaker in the Pike Place Market. So, of course, we had to walk around the market, which I love, but which definitely counts as touristy.

We went back up to Westlake and hung out for the afternoon, saw a few friends including Kaz from Na and Pol and Heather, and watched the reactions of people to the piece while I tried (and failed) not to take too many pictures. (Came home with almost 400!)

At 4:30 the INB came and played, and an unaffiliated performance artist went a little too far and attracted an ambulance and the fire department, (even though everyone could smell the catsup - does anyone know what the message/point was after all?) and it was time to pack up and go home.

The undercat needs a happy ending story too!

A Moment of Silence

March 26, 2006

7 kids dead for no reason. Seattle is still rolling from the blow, the largest mass killing in over 20 years here, early Saturday morning at a Capitol Hill home. Very little is known at this time, but the Stranger’s blog, or Slog as they call it, is piecing it all together as information is passed around. Very sad, very very sad. In honor, I’ll postpone reports of my silly birthday party for another day.

I love you too, Mr. Mickens!!!

DJ TAMARA’S B-DAY PARTY: REGGIE WATTS, JACOB LONDON, KRNL.PANIC, DJ FREDDY KING OF PANTS
(Chop Suey) Seattle’s own OG DJ Tamara has already, at the near dawn of her third decade, enjoyed an artistic career of astonishing volume and ridiculous diversity. A voraciously busy club DJ, multimedia artist, improvising musician, and lots of other shiz, Tamara has devoted her young life to an insanely passionate embrace of performance and composition in a far-flung swath of modes and settings. Apropos to the hostess’s free-range artistic involvements, this night—a massive party in celebration of the DJ’s 30th birthday—features modern soul, performance art, mashup DJs, electronic producers, free improvisers, and probably too much more to properly list. Co-headliner Reggie Watts has, like Tamara, managed a musical career that veers from the most pop-wielding, sweaty R&B to all stripes of experimental and improvised music. SAM MICKENS

In today’s Stranger Up&Coming section! What a pleasant surprise.

I love this show. It’s fascinating, and so HUMAN. And it’s raising so many questions, I wish I wasn’t so slammed right now, I want to write more about it, I’m not used to such challenging television, it’s only episode 3 but I really think it’s going somewhere.

WOW. The Al Jazeera interview is linked here, completely worth your time, watch the whole thing. I’m glad nobody reads my blog, so I don’t have to fear for my life, because I’ll say out loud that I admire this woman and agree with what she is saying.

You heard it here first…
