News from Josh
January 22, 2007
Thought y’all might like to hear some of Josh’s stories from the road.
Here’s what I got today:
“We’ve been on the Oaxacan coast for the last few days, first in Puerto Escondido, a surfing town, and now on a gorgeous beach near Salina Cruz. I tried to take us out to the end of a long peninsula backed by a lagoon to search for a secluded camp site, but ended up instead in the town of San Mateo del Mar, an indigenous village, where the dry, dusty landscape exploded with the brilliant colors of the women’s dresses. We walked through the Saturday market, the only foreigners there, to stares, giggles and severed chicken feet. I’ve turned into a zoo animal since we arrived in southern Mexico. There are far more brown people than white people here and twice now I’ve been mobbed by schoolchildren with all kinds of curious questions. I took pictures. I also took pictures of the largest tree in the world(!) and of those birds shaped like ¨M¨s that I was trying to describe for you in Mazatlan. Tonight we are staying in our white-sand paradise under a free palapa, then tomorrow driving east, and the next day arriving at the organic farm just south of San Cristobal in Chiapas.”
Also, his wonderful uncle George sent down a digital camera for Christmas, so Josh has actually been taking pictures!!! He’s started an account on flickr. Don’t miss his new beard!!!
