Artwalk tonight!
April 5, 2007
After work this evening, Josh and I are going to run around a bunch of galleries and things having to do with the Pioneer Square Artwalk. I am particularly looking forward to Etsuko Ichikawa’s solo show at Gallery4Culture, And I always like to visit SOIL and wander around the Tashiro Kaplan building, and of course visit Greg Kucera, Elliot Bay, and the 619 Western building. There’s something going on at Trinity from 6-10; considering that it’s free and that I haven’t been to the nightclub since I was a healthy DJ, I’d like to see what’s up and say hello. I also still haven’t been to Kucera’s ArtsResource yet on 1st and Cherry, (just blocks away from work!) though I often peek in the window of the frame shop.
We may also try to make it down to happy hour at McLeod Residence or to Lawrimore Project, but probably not both. If we can get down to Belltown, I’d really like to hit Suyama Space on 2nd & Bell as I haven’t seen Alex Schweder’s installation yet and I think Josh would dig it too. Maybe on the weekend. And who knew the NPCA had a gallery space? Apparently there’s a collection of photographs up right now, recent storm damage in Washington national parks. I like that kind of stuff too. So much to fit in after work!! I miss my car - and almost miss unemployment too (but not really, we can fill in holes on the weekend). I also miss my camera, durn. Which is why I’m glad to have my day job.
I’ll be sad to miss out on the ArtsLaunch event at 8pm at the TK building’s Vandenbrink Community Room, which I’ve enjoyed in the past, particularly because Sheri Brown is involved again and because I was so honored to be asked to show my photos in that room for last month’s artwalk. But we’re due up at CHAC on Capitol Hill by 8:30 to meet up with Monica for the “Ask Later Talks” at Ignite, a series of 5 minute quickfire presentations on a variety of subjects: http://www.igniteseattle.com/2007/04/ignite-3-ask-later-schedule/ If we can get there early enough, we can take part in the whole paper plane challenge, as can you. Feel free to join us for any part of the evening!
The guys behind Ignite Seattle are hosting the big Cruel 2 B Kind reality game at Cal Anderson park on the afternoon of 21st, which Miss M also recently covered over at her Net Native column (worth a read). THAT looks fun!

We ended up making it to Etsuko’s show, most of the TK building, Trinity, Occidental Park, McLeod Residence, and Ignite.
While nothing was completely mindblowing for me this month, I particularly enjoyed Maija Fiebig’s lovely (overpriced for me, but intricate, mature and high quality) paintings at G. Gibson Gallery. I was also struck by one photo in particular by Michael Kenna (Buddha Offering, 2006) in the window of the same gallery. I liked Jennifer Zwick’s work in the back of SOIL, John Taylor’s boats at Garde Rail (I always like stuff there), Hugh Walton and Shawn Patrick Landis video art at Punch (with cake!), and a not-for-sale cube by this random chain-mail jewelry vendor in the park. Hopefully I can get my camera fixed and take some real pics of his better work.
I was also pleasantly surprised by a couple pieces at Trinity - a couple of simple but good natured dinosaur/futuristic clashes painted on particleboard, and a fantastic print of Juan the Frye Apartment Guy that had been slashed a bit and quietly upstaged the rest of it’s maker’s work. Also a small scribble on canvas shouting “chicken” in Spanish that Josh and I were just amused by - but for different reasons. Wish I had names, sorry.
We also saw our friend Pol on the street! He and Josh hadn’t seen each other in months so we turned the scooter around. That was nice. And what a pleasant evening for a scooter ride!! If only we could find my motohelmet - I look silly in my old 6th grade bicycle helmet. Anyway, lovely.
Afterwards we hit Ignite. Totally worth it. See the play-by-play- courtesy of Twitter. Ran into some familiar faces- Monica, Daniel, and long-lost Channing, very nice! I am all intrigued to follow up on some of that info, but what I immediately recall without looking at notes or Monica’s blog is: Butterbur for Migranes, peerwisdom.com, and an affinity for several of the presenters, particularly the two admitting to ADD and the one with the abstract time-representation slide. More later.
