Artwalk tonight

May 3, 2007

Tonight I was determined to hit Suyama Space (crap, is Sac of Rooms down?) or Western Bridge, because I am completely ashamed to say that I have never been inside either and every month they seem to have something fantastic. Also, it’s been a while since I had a drink at the Hideout, and because I have an apple for Avery and the Cat seems to have gone MIA, I’d better at least go check out the new Review. Plus a couple of the guys from the Dusty 45s are playing, guitar and trumpet. Sounds nice.

Also of interest:
Design Commission, “Why Arts Education” exhibit
Lead Pencil Studio at Lawrimore Project
Tracy Curley is at La Familia, Christian French is at SOIL. Kinda interested in Kiki Smith at Greg Kucera. Kinda want to pop by some of the places I liked last month. Still meaning to go by the NPCA gallery space. Always so much to do!!!

BUT - Joshua and Haruko are taking us to the SAM opening tonight, so probably most of our time will be spent there, hooray!

Upcoming:
Disconnect opens tomorrow at McLeod Residence, very exciting because we heart Mandy Greer. She’s got something coming at the SAM gallery, too - May 10.
And then next week, the opening of the Cornish Art & Design BFA Exhibition, my favorite.
And Paul Rucker’s Catalyst opens at Jack Straw on the 11th.
Jessica Jobaris will be at CHAC for Reside/Generate May 5,12,and 19.

(Non sequitur: I want to learn how to make paper.)

Last night, (after sushi and drinks with Stevie P and Joe) I went to Dorkbot at 911 Media Gallery to hear my friend Damion from BLVD/DodgeBurn/Organic talk about street art. I spent 3 years (DJing) with the guy, drinking and playing loud music every single Friday night, and we never talked as much as we’ve talked about culture and society the 3 times I’ve seen him this year. And I got to meet the guy behind one of my favorite anythings ever, No Touching Ground, who I now adore more than ever. He used one of my photos of his work in his slideshow. It made me happy. It was like meeting a long-lost cousin. I invited him to get out of town with us sometime.

I haven’t been to a Dorkbot thing since, like, Speakeasy Cafe’ days. I like Dorks. They ask intelligent questions, and chatting afterwards made me “feel normal after a long day of trying to fit in”. I don’t feel like I have to talk or struggle because everyone’s saying it for me or saying something better and I’m in warm water. Art, inquisitiveness, sharing, nature icons pasted up on concrete, people exchanging ideas and challenging each other, possibility… These are the things that keep me alive.
