Blogger or Livejournal?

May 18, 2007

I’ve got something in the works.
Help me out, kids: Should I start it at Blogger or Livejournal? Why?
Or should I stick with Wordpress? This is for something I need a lot more control over, something REALLY easy that I can post photos on a lot, and a little more networking capability than Wordpress - also the spam here is out of control.

I’ve tried Blogger and Livejournal. Livejournal has been around a while and, to my eye, shows its age. If you’re motivated, you can make it look nice, though. I never much liked its interfaces and tools myself. I like Blogger fine so far but haven’t gotten too ambitious with modifying the look/feel yet. A big part of it for me is the integration with other Google services. Integration with Flickr seems limited to an RSS feed widget but I haven’t done much exploration. I also like that, with Blogger, you can integrate with a mobile device and post or send phone photos that way.

There was an OSX dashboard widget for posting to Blogger but it no longer works with the current site and has not been updated, so far as I know. There may be dashboard widgets for other sites.

I have a friend who maintains two Blogger blogs, one public and the other private.

Typepad seems to look very nice and have some handy widgets. A couple of my coworkers have blogs on Typepad that look good. Check out:

Integration with other Web 2.0 stuff looks pretty easy, too. I haven’t used it, however, so I can’t really vouch.

I haven’t used Wordpress. Blogster looks sort of low-rent but I haven’t used it either. In general, I stay away from anything labeled with a ‘-ster.’

I’ve recently taken my journal/blog private (and have gotten distracted from posting anyway) but will give you an invite if you have interest.

Oh - I remember now why I wasn’t using Typepad: it’s a pay service. A one month trial is free and they offer some relatively inexpensive plans, but I’m cheap when it comes to stuff on the web.

We used Wordpress for our site, http://www.rivetmagazine.org

Even the most techno-phobic members of the team are able to use the administrative interface to fix typos and add new posts.

The service is free, php-based, and has a huge community of developers. Its relatively easy to skin (ie add your own css) and the simple functions like typing, commenting, adding photos, etc, are actually simple. The comment spam protection is good, too.

OH, I didn’t read carefully, looks like you are already using Wordpress. Stick with it. Use the development community to help you with your problems. Just put your problem(s) out there and you will likely find a volunteer.
Akismet will provide the spam protection you need.

I’ve used Wordpress on a few sites and just switched over to Drupal for http://www.iorpheus.com. (Literally — haven’t finished modding the Gallery yet, but pretty solid for just one day of work). Wordpress is fine, but it’s on the hacker’s radar, and Drupal can’t be beat for ease of install and customizing. There is a flickr module that just might suite your needs.

And Buster McLeod suggested Vox and Typepad via email. Typepad’s out, if I have to pay. Except that CuteOverload is in Typepad, and it has some features that inspire me. Vox looks very cool, not sure if it’s right for the purpose but I’m going to fuss with it for a bit. Drupal too.

(Yes, Ch. - I’d like an invite)

I’m getting rather comfortable with Wordpress but I’m looking at all the options. It’s really helpful to see your examples and get opinions on backend - keep ‘em coming!! Thanks guys!!
