So, kids, what did we learn today?

June 28, 2007

Don’t use toothpaste from China
Where to get all the headlines
All sorts of things happen when you’re not paying attention.
The devil herself rides my bus. Great. Now I have to get up even EARLIER.
Rubber Duckies are sturdy.
There are still creatures in the world that there aren’t 5000 photos on flickr of. Ooh and another
National Geographic.com is my new favorite photojournalism source.
The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is apparently the most photographed event on Earth. (via this)
Owls dig soccer too
I’ve gotta get out more. (via Monica)
Sometimes people get what they deserve
And I’m going to have to move soon.
and finally….. …if you surf the internet at lunchtime instead of leaving the building, you’ll get a headache.

You can kick only so much ass before your foot gets sore.

Monica’s column today is really excellent, and so is the reader response. It’s on how mobile technologies are changing our lives - http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/guzman/320566_netnative21.html

iOrpheus/Cathedral Band update

Nora and Bill have arrived in Australia where they will create the public opera, iOrpheus, in the streets and promenades of South Bank, Brisbane. It is the final part of our Orpheus Trilogy–The iPod Opera 2.0–based on the story of Orpheus and Eurydice.

Check out our list of partners!

They have created a website to connect the cast and crew (both local and online), and thought you might like to take a look. It is not necessary to log in to explore the site.

www.iorpheus.com/

In addition to the opera in the streets, there will be a variety of iOrpheus activities online at Flickr, MySpace, del.icio.us, YouTube, and Second Life, where you can join in. So stay tuned.

And if you have not seen part 1 of the trilogy, it is available as 26 podcasts in both video and audio-only feeds. Here are the urls:

The Cathedral Project

Cathedral is one of the first interactive works of music and art on the web. It was created by William Duckworth and Nora Farrell. On-line since 1997, it consists of three primary components: a website featuring a variety of interactive musical, artistic, and text-based experiences; a group of virtual instruments that allow listeners to participate actively and creatively; and an Internet band that gives periodic live performances and offers listeners focused moments in which to come together and play music in community on-line.

Intellectual property 101

June 9, 2007

Sigh. From over on SLOG, where they used one of my photos in violation of it’s creative commons license:

“Purple Mark is a nice guy, and I’m sure brunch is lovely. However, that has nothing to do with the use of the photo here. I don’t care where you snagged it from, you have a responsibility to track down the copyright before posting it.

You do not have permission from the photographer to use this photo in this way. I know, because I am the photographer.

Luckily for you, it’s not a full copyright, but licensed under a generous Creative Commons license. I take thousands of photos for FREE USE by anyone who wants to use them for any noncommercial purpose, as long as the photographer is credited and a link back to the source is provided. In addition to the rules of the license, I am very flexible and easy to work with when people ASK PERMISSON to use things for commercial purposes. In these cases however, I generally don’t allow photos of people or the work of artists without the permission of those people or artists.

See this link for the full text of the license on this photo:
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.0/deed.en-us

I know you’re just a guest, so I asked nicely first. Do me the favor of playing by the rules, or I will ask SLOG to remove the photo.

I repeat: properly credit the photo, and this will suffice as the link back to the source: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeasart/169499957/ which ALSO links to the CC license, clear as day. Please give other photographers the same courtesy in the future - because while this one instance isn’t really that big a deal, in the information age intellectual property and data exchange is very important.”

I’m too tired to take on CC stuff, I wasted all my moral energy on the whole female commodification thing in the 90s as a dj and see where refusing to play all-girl parties and shake my ass on the internet got me. Anyway, I tried. I feel bad because I let Seattlest and the PI slide earlier this week on linking back properly because they at least credited, but I had to say something. I’m sure eventually I’ll tire of this too, and someone younger and smarter can take the world on.

Awwwwwwwwww!

Why did I feel it in my gut when I read this

Poor sweet baby. Go ahead, bash me over the head with all the instances of elephant deaths in the wild due to human encroachment if you want, those make me sad too, but she was the only baby elephant I ever knew and saw regularly. And of course, like when distant relatives or estranged friends pass on, I feel all bad, like I should have visited more. I also feel like I never got a good enough photo of her… never did her justice, and now I can’t.

We’re strange creatures.

Anyway, it’s sad; she was so well taken care of, brought joy to so many (and mad traffic to the zoo), and this was unexpected.
