Why did I feel it in my gut when I read this

Poor sweet baby. Go ahead, bash me over the head with all the instances of elephant deaths in the wild due to human encroachment if you want, those make me sad too, but she was the only baby elephant I ever knew and saw regularly. And of course, like when distant relatives or estranged friends pass on, I feel all bad, like I should have visited more. I also feel like I never got a good enough photo of her… never did her justice, and now I can’t.

We’re strange creatures.

Anyway, it’s sad; she was so well taken care of, brought joy to so many (and mad traffic to the zoo), and this was unexpected.
